5 unique activity ideas for your next family vacation on the French Riviera

The French Riviera is often associated with sunshine, relaxation, beaches, and endless swimming—making it the perfect family vacation destination. While it certainly has all that to offer, it would be a shame to limit it to just a postcard image. With its enchanting landscapes between sea and mountains, charming Provencal villages, and legendary seaside resorts, the French Riviera presents a multitude of exciting adventures for families. Here are 5 amazing activity ideas to explore this destination from a different angle and create unforgettable memories for your children.

1. Go snorkeling to discover the underwater world

Do your kids love swimming? It’s the perfect time to introduce them to new aquatic sensations with snorkeling. Grab your fins, masks, and snorkels, and dive into the underwater world. After a short adjustment period to the new equipment, embark on fun and educational marine trails along the coastline as a family. You can venture independently along the path from Pampelonne to Ramatuelle or the Crocodile islet at La Croix-Valmer. There are also guided snorkeling excursions available at Les Issambres and Sainte-Maxime. This thrilling adventure allows both children and parents to learn more about the marine biodiversity of the French Riviera and the importance of preserving this precious ecosystem.

2. Observe nature along the water in a canoe kayak

Navigating a river by canoe in the heart of the wilderness is sure to delight budding adventurers. Head to Roquebrune on the banks of the Argens for a wonderful day of paddling down to the sea, complete with swimming breaks. Glide along the peaceful waters of the Argens, surrounded by tranquil and lush landscapes. Kids will be on the lookout for turtles, herons, kingfishers, and carp that inhabit this green paradise.
On the coastal side, kayaking is a fantastic way to explore the French Riviera from a different perspective. In Saint-Raphael, for example, we highly recommend renting a kayak or booking a guided tour to admire the stunning colors of the Estérel, where red rocks plunge into turquoise waters, and to visit inaccessible calanques and sea caves. Ready to paddle?

3. Explore stunning sites by bike

For sporty families who love cycling, the Var coast offers plenty of attractions. The region boasts numerous well-maintained bike paths for safe and enjoyable long rides. Our favorite is the former railway line of the Pignes train, which runs along the French Riviera from Hyères to Cogolin.
For mountain biking enthusiasts, there are also plenty of options. Two trails stand out for their breathtaking scenery:

  • The Cap Lardier MTB trail in La Croix-Valmer (16 km loop, moderate level) takes you through a protected natural area, offering splendid views of the Hyères Islands and the Bay of Saint-Tropez.

  • The Family Circuit in the Esterel Massif, starting from Agay to Saint-Raphael (15 km loop, easy level), is perfect for a leisurely ride among parasol pines and the striking red rocks lining the route.

4. Climb forests and cliffs safely

Looking to try a complete sport activity with thrilling and unique sensations? You’ll love climbing—just make sure you’re not afraid of heights! If you’re staying near Saint-Raphaël, take the opportunity for a family introduction to one of the French Riviera’s must-visit spots: Cap Dramont. Whether via ferrata or on a child-friendly route suitable for kids aged 6 and up, you’ll climb the red cliffs right above the sea, finishing with an exhilarating rappel descent. Magical!

You can also scale the treetops with treetop adventure courses available at several locations in the region. Climb, jump, and swing from tree to tree while overcoming fears—there’s no age limit for sharing fun and challenging moments.

This adventure is accessible for kids as young as 3 and can be enjoyed at specialized amusement parks in Grimaud or Sainte-Maxime. Laughter is guaranteed!

5.Explore the city through Street Art

When you suggest taking kids to see paintings in a museum, the response may not always be enthusiastic. But if you swap the museum for the streets of a city and the paintings for large-scale graffiti on building facades, you’re more likely to capture their interest. This is the gamble that Saint-Raphael took by creating its street art trail. With over twenty artworks to discover, this vast outdoor gallery invites you to stroll through the streets for about 1.5 hours. The route can also turn into a treasure hunt for younger ones. Culture can be a unique and exciting family adventure!

Are you tempted by one of these unusual activities? Take advantage of your rental with Pioma Home to plan this experience and turn your family vacation on the French Riviera into a unique and unforgettable time of togetherness.
